_National Runaway Switchboard (NRS)NRS offices are located on the corner of Greenview and Barry. Here, they run their national switchboard. All 1-800-RUNAWAY phone calls from the 50 United States and territories are answered at this location by one of 8 phone lines. Trained volunteers keep the phones running 24-7, all year. Mission: To help keep America’s runaway, homeless and at-risk youth safe and off the streets. For Educators: NRS has created a curriculum designed to build life skills, provide alternatives to running away, encourage youth to access and seek help from the community. NRS hosts "Kids Call", an interactive speakerphone session with classes to educate youth about runaways and common myths. For Youth: Phone calls range from youth seeking homeless shelters, to suicide calls, to runaway youth attempting to get back home safely. Home Free Program: NRS works with Greyhound Buses to get youth in crisis back home. Greyhound will provide a free ticket home. This must be youth-initiated, and youth who qualify must be able to provide proof of identity, and go through an phone mediation with the guardian they are returning to. For Parents: NRS is a great resource for parents of missing youth, or for parents seeking parenting advice. By phoning 1-800-Runaway, parents are connected to resources ranging from legal advice, to how to talk to their children, to alternative school solutions. |
