Our school counseling program has a comprehensive and developmental approach to meeting the needs of all students. We will provide academic, career, and personal/social development for all students at the school; however, our main focus is on personal/social development. The students at our school are already provided with an academically rich environment and curriculum which is evident through standardized test scores. Furthermore, the needs assessment indicated that students are in need of enhancing their personal/social skills. Therefore, the competencies and indicators we chose to address are based on our school counseling program goals and the specific needs of the students. The ASCA National Model competencies and indicators directly align with the personal/social goals of the programs we plan to implement through classroom guidance lessons, small groups, and other interventions.
The Statement of Philosophy for Lane Tech’s school counseling department addresses how to best serve all students at the school. We intend to align our work with the Lane Tech mission statement which “prepares students for success in their post-secondary endeavors of school, career, community and family life.” Through the implementation of classroom, group, and individual activities, we plan to address the growing need for personal/social guidance of our students in order to prepare them to achieve lifelong goals. We will use data to achieve Lane Tech’s school counseling program’s goals as well as to address the specific needs of our diverse student population. Through collaboration with school staff, students’ families, and community leaders, we will advocate for the high-quality education of our students in a safe learning environment.
In developing Lane Tech’s school counseling department’s Mission Statement, we referenced the school and district mission statements. We wanted the mission statement to address the most important factor of our school counseling program which is putting the needs of the students first. Lane Tech’s mission statement will guide our counseling program which will provide academic, career, and personal/social development for our students. We will collaborate with important stakeholders in order to successfully educate our students to be responsible and professional global citizens.
To accurately establish Lane Tech’s school counseling program goals, we first analyzed the results of our needs assessment. The results indicated that students need more support in the area of personal/social development. Specific areas of personal/social interest included maintaining healthy relationships with self and others and coping with grief/loss issues, among many others. Through the needs assessment we gathered information that suggested students' interest in small groups, peer-mentoring programs, and classroom guidance talks during Division (homeroom). As a result of our data, we created the program goals which align with the school mission statement of “establishing an environment where mutual respect and positive relationships exist between students and staff.” Since our school’s major focus is on academic and career development, we decided to attend more to students’ personal/social development.
